SKIN AND FLESH
2024
This work is a form of self-exploration and discovery of my relationship with both food and my body by seeking to understand what food means to me. In this project, I have used both my body and the food to show the layers of complexity of my relationship with food. I wrestle with the clash between the need for nutrition and my desire to cook creatively versus my body dysmorphia and my desire to keep my ideal body as I imagine it. The flesh and skin are connected as one, abstracted from the body to show the beautiful, the grotesque, the tender, the visceral, and the disorienting relationship amongst them as I attempt to connect with the food. However, that link is unattainable, and I am left with the urge to keep seeking it. This performative act focuses on the texture, wetness, softness, and harshness of my body as the vessel, by being at the same time physical yet vulnerable.
